Volunteer Project Part of National NeighborWorks® Week June 3-10, 2006

Team Depot volunteer associates from local The Home Depot® stores spent their day off helping volunteers from Cobb Housing, Inc. build two houses and landscape four homes for low-to-moderate income, first-time homebuyers in the Mitchell Chase Subdivision. Mitchell Chase is a workforce housing community located in Mableton, Georgia. The volunteers worked so hard and so fast that the work was completed by 2:00 p.m., an hour ahead of schedule.

Mitchell Chase Community Kicks Off National Arbor Day

Mableton, GA – On Friday, February 17, 2006, volunteers from Home Depot and Cobb Housing, Inc. (CHI) will help thirty-five 5th and 6th graders from Grace Baptist Christian School plant 25 trees in the Mitchell Chase Community.  Mitchell Chase is located at 5793 Old Gordon Road at the corner of Old Gordon and Lee Road, directly behind the South Cobb Library on Mableton Parkway.  The National Arbor Foundation will provide breakfast and lunch for volunteers, Georgia Forestry will site the tree areas and CHI will dig the holes.  Keep Cobb Beautiful/Cobb Trees will coordinate delivery of the trees and provide mulch, shovels, pitch forks, rakes, etc. for volunteers.

 

Cobb Housing, Inc. Bridges the Gap for 1st Time Homebuyers

Marietta, GA -- According to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) report, FYI:  An Update in Emerging Issues in Banking (March 22, 2005), “Financial, legal and insurance documents are integral parts of the home-buying process, yet a 2004 poll identified these types of documents as three of the five most perplexing information sources in Americans’ daily lives.  Although a mortgage application is the document that starts the home-buying process, it was identified by many Americans as the most difficult document to understand…Lack of information and misconceptions involving credit and mortgage qualifications are a significant part of the overall homeownership information gap.”

 

Cobb Housing, Inc. Bridges the Information Gap for    First-Time Hispanic Homebuyers

Marietta, GA – A recent article released by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) entitled, “Bridging the Information Gap:  How Bankers Can Help the Hispanic Population Realize the American Dream of Homeownership”, says two primary obstacles for 1st time Hispanic homebuyers are the language barrier and misinformation about the home buying process.  Additionally, “The Hispanic population is the largest and fastest-growing ethnic group in the United States.  Much of the recent growth has been in states such as Georgia and Nebraska…Moreover, the number of affluent Hispanic households, while small, is increasing rapidly.”  In a survey, most prospective Hispanic homebuyers indicated they would be willing to attend free classes on the home-buying process.

 

Lonneil Wade – A Rising Star Lost to the Streets He Had Left Behind

Marietta, GA -- In April, 2003, Lonneil Wade, Eric White and Jamal Owens, the top three students in their class, traveled from Georgia to Washington D.C. to participate in Capitol Hill Day, 2003 representing the Cobb Housing, Inc. YouthBuild program.  The goal of the YouthBuild movement is to create and sustain a broad-based national movement in support of policies and programs, which enable young people to assume leadership in order to rebuild their communities and lead responsible lives.  They spoke with state legislators as part of a coalition to encourage funding at the state level.  The young men talked about how they got started in the program and how it has helped turn their lives around.

 

Community Embraces At-Risk Youth and Celebrates Their Achievements

Marietta GA -- On June 30th at 6:30 p.m., the community will come together to recognize and celebrate the achievements of a special group of young people.  The YouthBuild 2004-2005 graduating class (20 students) will receive their diplomas (GED) and head toward a brighter future, armed with high school equivalency certificates and construction experience under their belts.  The graduation commencement ceremony will begin with dinner at the YWCA at 46 Henderson Street in Marietta. Awards will be presented for GED Scores, Construction, All-Around and Student of the Year.
